Catching rainwater isn’t exactly rocket science. The overall concept is pretty simple: Have a way for rain that hits a surface to be funneled and caught in a holding tank. While this is largely true, there is far more to the ins and outs of catching rainwater. Especially if you plan on using the water you catch for your cleaning, cooking, and drinking purposes.

If all you were doing with the water was using it for the garden, the scenario above would be all you really need to do. Just catch it off the roof of the greenhouse and store it in various containers to be used later. When you want to use it in your home for everyday use, there are a few key components that need to be in place to make it safe for consumption.

Other than the filtration aspect, there are many considerations about how the water is caught, animal interference that can cause contamination from bacteria, and how much sunlight the holding tank is exposed to. The holding tank also needs to be in a secure place that will not shift with the weight of the water and built to lessen the chances of freezing in extreme temperatures.
