Homemade Flubber for Kids (Recipe)

Are you ready to create an exciting and fun sensory experience for kids? Flubber is a squishy, stretchy, and gooey substance that provides hours of entertainment. It’s a fantastic DIY project that combines creativity with simple science, perfect for a rainy day or an educational activity at home. This recipe is safe, non-toxic, and easy to make with ingredients you likely already have.

What is Flubber?

Flubber is a non-Newtonian fluid, which means it can act like both a solid and a liquid. It’s similar to slime but thicker and more elastic. Kids love it because it can stretch, bounce, and mold into different shapes. Plus, it’s reusable!

Materials Needed

  • 2 cups of white school glue (PVA glue works best)
  • 1 1/2 cups of warm water
  • 1 tablespoon of Borax (available in the laundry section of most stores)
  • Food coloring (optional but fun for customization)
  • A large mixing bowl
  • A spoon for stirring
  • Measuring cups

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Borax Solution

In a small bowl, dissolve 1 tablespoon of Borax in 1 cup of warm water. Stir until the Borax is completely dissolved. This will serve as your flubber’s “activator.”

Step 2: Mix Glue and Water

In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of white glue with 1/2 cup of warm water. Stir the mixture well until the glue is diluted and smooth. If you want to add some color to your flubber, now is the time to drop in a few drops of food coloring.

Step 3: Combine the Solutions

Slowly pour the Borax solution into the glue mixture while stirring constantly. The mixture will start to solidify almost immediately, transforming into a stretchy, gooey substance.

Step 4: Knead the Flubber

Once the two solutions have been mixed, you’ll see the flubber begin to form. Use your hands to knead it for a few minutes until it becomes less sticky and more cohesive. If it’s too slimy, add a tiny bit more Borax solution until you achieve the desired texture.

Step 5: Play and Store

Now that your flubber is ready, it’s time to let the kids have fun! They can stretch it, bounce it, and mold it into shapes. When playtime is over, store it in an airtight container to keep it fresh for future use.

Safety Tips

  • Flubber is non-toxic but should not be ingested. Make sure children wash their hands after playing with it.
  • Always supervise younger children when playing with flubber, especially if Borax is used in the recipe.

Cleanup Tips

  • Flubber can stick to fabric, but soaking it in warm water with a little dish soap should do the trick.
  • Clean surfaces with warm, soapy water if flubber gets on tables or counters.
